Grief Migration: A Spiritual Invitation
June 19, 2024 at The High Museum of Art
Performances : 11 AM, 11:30 AM, 1 PM, 1:30 PM
Admission: Free of charge
Moving in the Spirit’s Youth Ambassadors will premiere a new work, Grief Migration: A Spiritual Invitation, as part of The High Museum of Art’s Juneteenth activities on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.
Our dancers will commemorate the holiday throughout the day by performing an original site-specific dance in front of “EW, SN,” an evocative painting by the late Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey.
The painting’s title references the Great Migration, a period from 1910 to 1970 during which over six million African Americans, including Bailey’s own relatives, moved from the East to the West and from the South to the North in search of economic opportunities in industrial urban centers.
Mr. Bailey learned the history of the Great Migration through the work of painter Jacob Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence inspired Moving in the Spirit’s recent evening-length performance Journey on the A Train: A Jacob Lawrence Story. Our dancers and choreographer, Lamia Dingle, see Grief Migration as a beautiful opportunity to connect the legacies of each artist and honor the many sacrifices of the ancestors who came before us.
This event is part of the High Museum’s Access for All program, and it promises to be a day filled with art, culture, and celebration. Admission to the museum and all activities is free of charge.
The High Museum of Art is located at 1280 Peachtree Rd NE | Atlanta, GA 30309.
