Our Space to Soar: A New Home for Moving in the Spirit
“It takes hands to build a building.
It takes hearts to make a home.
A space to soar is our destination.
It is our home away from home.”
–Janan Mirza, alumna.
2013
Moving in the Spirit’s students, staff and stakeholders envisioned a new facility, near public transit, where young people could soar through creative youth development and dance programs of the highest quality.
Inspired by the vision, MARTA and Columbia Ventures selected Moving in the Spirit as the community-arts anchor for their new development at Edgewood/Candler Park station.
2021
We opened our doors to young people from across our city, exemplifying how the arts can unite communities and empower youth.
Led by renowned architects Perkins&Will, the architectural design of Moving in the Spirit’s new home involved 64 stakeholders — from students, alumni, and parents to board members, staff, arts leaders and community partners.
The state-of-the-art facility doubles Moving in the Spirit’s capacity from 250 to 500 students. Positioned directly next to the MARTA rail line, the facility meets our community’s need for transit-accessibility and is fully ADA compliant.
A 138-seat theater serves as a resource to Atlanta’s professional dance community and creative industries, and will broaden Moving in the Spirit’s reach to an additional 15,000 families each year through performances and workshops.
Two 40’x60’ studios feature top-of-the-line Harlequin sprung floors to protect our dancers’ muscles and joints and prevent injuries. One has a marley floor and the other has a wooden surface, offering flexibility and a variety for our young dancers and visiting artists.
Moving in the Spirit created our new home to be a beacon of hope for youth, a destination for dance, and a resource for our community. Interested in utilizing our space for your organization, performance, or event? Learn more!
