Special Events

20th Anniversary: In 2006, Moving in the Spirit celebrated our 20th anniversary! In honor of achieving this milestone, Moving in the Spirit held a spectacular gala at the Fox Theatre. The event was an opportunity to celebrate Moving in the Spirit’s achievements, reflect upon the lives touched, thank our generous supporters, and raise money to support student scholarships. The evening featured a silent auction, decadent food and exciting performances by Moving in the Spirit teachers, alumni and co-founder Leah Mann. Special guest Jocelyn Doresey of WSB-TV emceed the 20th Anniversary Celebration, which included the surprise presentation of two awards: the Coca-Cola Alumni Impact Award, given to Chris McCord and the Community Service Award, presented to Gayle Cummings. Another highlight was the screening of a commerative film created by the Art Institute of Atlanta. We are delighted to announce that the Anniversary Celebration was an overwhelming success, yielding over $30,000 that will go straight to the Stepping Stones, Apprentice Corporation and Junior Company programs. Thanks to the event co-chairs, Sheryl Bennett and Enid Draluck as well as our many sponsors, hosts, donors and volunteers. The Holiday Store is an essential part of our Youth Development Program at Moving in the Spirit. More than 200 children work hard all year long and earn points by showing responsibility, discipline, and dedication. The points redeem gifts for their friends and family. Literacy in Motion is Moving in the Spirit’s annual large scale production. The show serves as a culminating experience for all participants of MITS programs, giving each class an opportunity to shine onstage before a public audience. MITS collaborates with local artists and youth organizations to create this dynamic evening of multimedia performance. In the past, collaborators have included Neighborhood Music Schools, Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde and renowned poet, Alice Lovelace. We believe that collaborative partnerships allow us to bridge communities, transcend barriers and deepen the cultural impact of our creative work.
